Curtis & Stam International Design & Trade was established by James Curtis and Sheila Stam in 2005.

The two met while working for international aid organizations and traveling the African continent on humanitarian aid missions tackling such
issues as HIV/AIDS, food insecurity, the plight of refugees and displaced people.

It is not always easy to see the beauty in a continent so plagued by such human suffering. In fact Africa is as beautiful as it is complex and the
varied people who live on the continent have rich and complex past. While it sometimes becomes diluted as the western world encroaches on
thousands of years of tradition and culture, the spirit of the past and the present live through the works of artists and craftsmen.

Over the past few years Curtis & Stam has slowly expanded its trading to Europe and North America making the items you see on this website
available to be enjoyed by many more people.

Curtis & Stam ensures that the items available through this website are of the best quality available and as much as possible are procured from
local craftsmen who benefit directly from their sale. Most items imported from Mali and some other countries must be photographed and
cleared by the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Antiquities.

Finally, in order to continue to give back to the communities where items are procured, Curtis & Stam allocates a portion of every income
dollar to support small sustainable development projects through
Artreach. Please visit the page dedicated to these activities.

Both partners continue to work in the field of humanitarian aid and development on a consultancy or advisory basis.
